UV stands for ultraviolet. It’s part of the electromagnetic spectrum with wavelengths between 10nm and 400nm. UVA is the longer wavelengths of UV light, meaning it’s closer to visible light, while UVB is shorter wavelengths, meaning it has a higher frequency than UVB. Most UVB from the sun is blocked by the ozone layer, but UVA is not.

In terms of health effects, UVB doesn’t penetrate your skin as deeply and is more directly responsible for tanning and sunburns, while UVA penetrates to your deeper layers of skin and is more closely linked to long-term skin damage from sun exposure. Both UVA and UVB contribute to skin cancer.

What’s the difference between red and green light?

Red has a longer wavelength. Less energy per photon.

Similarly, UVA has a longer wavelength than UVB. Both are still higher energy than visible light. And like visible light, different materials can absorb one of them more than the other.
