Why are we trying to treat, immobilize or cure a disease? Why don’t we just try changing it’s gene composition?

If we can modify gene’s already, can’t we just modify a cancers composition to something that is harmless for the human body except for trying to fully kill it? Or changing it so that it’s even healthy or trying to help our body even?
Its a question in general for all diseases. Wouldn’t it be even a better approach, because while we try to kill the roots of a bacteria, virus or any kind of disease, the treatment has usually side effects and/or making good cells go bad (e.g. chemo)?
