Why do different “under-paper” surface materials affect the efficiency of a pen?


When you use a pen on a piece of paper, why does it change how easily the ink comes out of the tip of the pen based on what the surface the paper is sitting on is?
(ie. If the paper is on wood and it isn’t writing well, move it onto a stack of paper/notebook and surprise! The pen works better)

Because most pens have a little ball in the tip and if it can’t roll it can’t dispense ink evenly…hence smooth surface with a bit of friction ball can roll…too smooth (like waxy papers) or too rough like wood and it can roll…you probably generally don’t have this problem with other types of pens
