Why do some channels display some (newish) shows in terrible quality and/or small boxes?

If you are talking about YouTube channels, they are trying to avoid the videos being taken down automatically by the YouTube copyright detection algorithms.

YouTube’s bots scan videos can compare them to existing content in the database – if it is a close match to copyrighted content, the video gets pulled. Lowering the quality, reversing the image and/or putting the video in a smaller box is sometimes enough to trick the bots.

Televisions have been quickly getting better. Things not made in high definition look terrible in high definition. The TV is too good to handle the footage so the end result is a blotching picture as the TV fills in pixels. The TV has no knowledge is what things are supposed to look like.
