Why do some mirrors make the reflection horizontally stretched while some make it vertically stretched? Is anything a true reflection then?

You ever looked at your reflection in the side of a vehicle and pretended to be a dwarven warrior? That surface is convex and wide so you look shorter and wider.

A mirror that is convex, but only in the horizontal direction will stretch everything horizontally. A mirror that is convex in the vertical direction will stretch everything vertically. A mirror that is concave horizontally will squish or compact everything horizontally…. etc.

There are variations on this, as a mirror can be distorted in more than one direction and at more than one place.

A flat mirror will give an accurate reflection of things the way they are.
