Why do some things feel heavier when wet?

Because they actually are heavier. You are adding mass to the material when you add water. It’s the same as if you took a gallon jug and filled it with water – it will be heavier than an empty jug. But in this case, you can’t see the water as easily.

Mass of object + mass of water= literally heavier. You feel the added weight of that water.
