Why do we need to update graphic drivers if the GPUs don’t change?

Every once in a while you must update your graphic drivers or else you get weird glitches in games. Why? The hardware is the same right?

So there’s hardware and there’s software

Hardware is the physical item, software is what runs it

Drivers are like software

For the hardware to communicate with your operating system, it needs a driver. Something to tell it what to do. They develop the driver the best they can and release it with the graphics card. But they will periodically release updates that better support new games, fix bugs, and enable new features.

Normally if a game works on an old driver, it will continue to work. It’s the new games that the updates are for (normally anyway)
