Why does the pitch of your voice sometimes gets lowered when you’re having a cold?

I woke up this morning sounding like Darth Vader and it made me wonder. Also, why is it more extreme in the morning and does it kinda ‘wear off’ during the day?

It is caused by the inflammation of your vocal cords. The thicker the vocal cord, the slower it vibrates. The slower it vibrates, the lower the pitch of your voice.

Your vocal cords are inactive overnight allowing for mucus to form and sit on your them and causing them to vibrate slower. The term for it is Morning Voice
