Why is a restroom called a restroom?

Why is the restroom called the “restroom,” tried to search this subreddit for answers, didn’t come across any. I think most people would be reluctant to actually rest in a restroom.

The word “rest” has a few other meetings, most of which are somewhat archaic. One of those meaning is “to refresh yourself” which is the most likely origin of the word “restroom” – it was a room where you went to “refresh yourself”.

Now, naturally it was a euphemism for what was _really_ going on, but it isn’t any different than when women use to “go powder their nose” as a euphemism (which, consequently, is also why half-baths are often called “powder rooms”)
