Theres always a frame of reference for up and down, like sky or ground and gravity. Left and right are actually way more ambiguous as they switch when you turn around. Theyre relative to the viewer not the world.

There’s always a point of reference for up and down. Ground/floors indicate the direction of down. The sky/ceilings always indicate the direction of up.

As far as left and right, your point of reference always changes. Maybe there’s a tree to your left and a rock to your right, maybe both sides have walls.

You can move in any direction and the things to your left and right will change. But your feet are always pointing to down, and your head always points towards up.

Edit: I forgot to mention that I’m no expert, this just makes sense to me and is always how I’ve looked at it

Also gravity. Since you can always feel the downward force on your body you always know which way is down, therefore you always know which way is up.

Up and down are defined by gravity. Gravity pulls down.

Right and left are arbitrary. There is no universal physical property that defines right or left.
