Why is pharmacy spelt with a “Ph” instead of a “F”

Same goes for other words like elephant, phalanx, etc etc.

These words are of greek origin, at least pharmacy and phalanx, that is. I am not certain of Elephant.

Anyhow, the “Ph” represents the letter Phi in the greek alphabet, and carried that “F” sound with the “Ph” spelling into the english language as we adopted many words from many different languages throughout it’s history.

Final phalanx
F vs fh sound, the ph usually is a softer aspirated sound. It appears as if it is hard for american english speakers to hear. I should not be surprised as that same group say things like rough and roof sound alike.
