A foot is approx. 1/3 of a meter. Why isn’t a sq ft 1/3rd of a sq meter?

A foot is 0,30m and a sq ft is 0,09m. I know some will say because 0,3 times 0,3 is 0,09 but that wouldn’t explain the break of logic as I perceive it.

For the same reason a square foot isn’t a third of a square yard. Math.

A yard is exactly 3 feet.

A square yard is therefore 3 feet x 3 feet = 9 square feet.

1 square foot is 1 foot x 1 foot = 1 sq ft.

1/3 of a meter times 1/3 of a meter = 1/9 of a meter. Because (1/3)^2 = 1/9

Beyond that it’s “the break of logic *as [you] perceive it*” that’s the problem. It’s a perception issue, not a logic issue.
