Anonimity of witnesses in crime docuseries

Okay so, I watch a lot of shows like Forensic Files, and every once in a while, there will be an interviewee who wishes to stay anonimus. What the producers usually do is they put a shadow over the persons face.

Now, to me this looks like a poor attempt at hiding someone’s identity. You can still hear the persons voice and language register, and you can see the outline of the shape of their head and hair.

Is there anything else that is done to protect the person’s identity that viewers might not necessarily register? Such as changing their voice perhaps.

You assume that is the actual person who is giving the statement. It is trivial to take a statement and have an actor deliver the same lines from shadow. That way the real witness is completely protected and the audience gets the idea that someone like the shadowed figure gave the statement.

They usually mask the voice. If you notice, the voice usually sounds really deep, like playing a cassette tape back at a slow speed. The silhouette you see is most likely altered as well.
