Aren’t almost all animals prehistoric? Why would that be a designation?

So I recently saw a Sandhill Crane eating a mouse which sent me down a rabbit hole about Sandhills cranes. One website is quotes saying “The sandhill crane is a prehistoric species” and it got me thinking. What animals are not prehistoric? Is there a different definition aside from before recorded history? Even domesticated animals were found in the Fertile Crescent. Is it just a buzzword to make the animal seem cooler? I just don’t understand. If written history began around 3500 BCE wouldn’t every animal that existed prior to that be considered a prehistoric animal?

That’s an interesting question. I’ve normally heard ‘prehistoric animals’ used to refer to animals that became extinct in prehistory. Calling an extent speacies prehistoric seems confusing.
