So I recently saw a Sandhill Crane eating a mouse which sent me down a rabbit hole about Sandhills cranes. One website is quotes saying “The sandhill crane is a prehistoric species” and it got me thinking. What animals are not prehistoric? Is there a different definition aside from before recorded history? Even domesticated animals were found in the Fertile Crescent. Is it just a buzzword to make the animal seem cooler? I just don’t understand. If written history began around 3500 BCE wouldn’t every animal that existed prior to that be considered a prehistoric animal?

There are a tiny group of animals that are historic. Some species of lab mice and fruit flies are the ones that come to mind. Where they have been selectively breed to such an extent that they are no longer sexually compatible with their wild cousins.
Dogs evolved with humans.
Sheep and goats separating into different species also happened very recently. You can get archeological remains of things that are common ancestors between sheep and goat in human settlements.
