Unconscious is just a state you can be in. Sleeping is a normal part of life in which people are unconscious. Comas are extended periods of unconsciousness that are not a normal part of life.

Going unconscious from something like getting hit on the head is a sort of disorientation caused by your brain being shaken inside your skull. The only difference between a brief spell of unconsciousness and a coma is how long you are out for. Physiologically, blacking out from being hit on the head is effectively a short coma.

Unlike the unconscious state such as that of a coma, sleep is much different. Sleep is a normal biological function and much more of a person is functioning when sleeping vs when they are in a coma. The specifics are, well, very specific but the primary difference is that being unconscious is a complete shutoff of most of the nonessential parts of the brain whereas sleep is a sort of reduced consciousness, in which most of the parts of the brain simply become less active, not completely inactive.
