– Belly Buttons : Innie vs Outie

What determines if one has an innie or outie belly button? Genetics? How the doctor ties the umbilical cord? How it heals and falls off?

It really is random and has to do with how the small stump of your umbilical cord fell off after been born. There are medical conditions that can influence it but it’s mostly just luck of the draw.

google says:

“Most people who have an “outie” fall into one of two categories: either they were born with a tiny umbilical hernia, which is most likely, or had a small infection at the base of the umbilical cord that went unnoticed. This will cause unusual tissue called granulation tissue to form.”

aka genetics and luck (or unlucky based on how you see outies)

chance of being an outie is 1/10 as other peeps mentioned

Lots of complicated factors with most of them when you’re an adult not at all related to how the doctor tied it or how how it healed. It’s mostly random development along with some genetics and epigenetics mixed in with a bit of lifestyle/activity/diet stuff.

When you’re born, the umbilical cord is cut and you have a small piece left called the umbilical stump. One to 2 weeks after birth, this stump falls off and what remains is your belly button. As a result, your belly button is essentially a scar. Whether it’s an innie or outie depends on how your skin grows as it heals.
