Can someone please explain bullet spread in video games and why it matters?

Bullet spread simulates inaccuracy in aiming. It is usually higher in guns fired in automatic mode where the shot is affected by the previous recoil. Spread is also higher in shotguns with a short barrel. Rather than all bullets going in a straight line from the gun ot the target, they fall somehere within a cone. The bigger the base of the cone, the worse the acccuracy.
