– Can someone please explain to me how they knew that carrying the spaceshuttle on the back of a 747 was possible Before they actually tried it?

The 747 was designed as a cargo plane, it was meant to carry heavy equipment like tractors/tanks/construction equipment. The space shuttle was designed to be as light as possible. NASA and Boeing had plenty of computers and engineers working for them.
