Could we store kinetic energy in the shaft or around a windturbine

Question

wind turbines are usualy pretty high, could we lift a heavy weight or pump fluids up with excess power of wind turbines, like when you use the height diffrence of 2 lakes but then inside the shaft of a wind turbine.

Yes, there are real proposals (and working prototypes) to build turbines that either lift heavy weight blocks, or pump water up to an elevated reservoir.
