Do movie directors write the story that have on their mind, or do they get someone to write it for them?

Directors direct and writers write. The director can ad lib small things but script rewrites need to go through the writers first. Sometimes there’s a writer on set that will change things or sign off on changes. I guess a director could also have written the story too but more commonly the just direct.
