As long as it contains flouride, any of the major brands is fine. Extra words like cavity prevention are mostly branding.

Some contain extra chemicals to whiten your teeth. This is purely cosmetic.

Some help with sensitive teeth, which really does help if you have those.

If you don’t have sensitive teeth or care about extra whitening, just pick a flavor.

What about those that taste like you have a mouthful of salty soil?

I asked my dentist about this when I was about 10.

He hauled out a couple of different brands of toothpaste and went through the ingredients list.

The main ones are:
Flouride
Soap
Some abrasive

Some of them have whiteners and/or mild local anesthetics.

Then they add colors, flavorings, preservatives and filler.

The important part of toothpaste is the flouride content that transforms the hydroxyapatite in your tooth enamel into tougher fluorapatite.

Also important, don’t rinse your mouth after brushing. Just spit. Unless the flouride has done to diffuse and bond you won’t get much benefit. This is really important if you have weak enamel.

As other commenters have stated, as long as it has fluoride, that’s what matters. Fluoride is pretty neat, it essentially binds with your enamel to make a tougher substance. This protects against cavities, erosion, and sensitivity (exposure of the tissue underneath the enamel is what causes sensitivity, so you’re creating a barrier to cover that tissue). As far as gum disease, it has less to do with the type of toothpaste and more to do with actually brushing away plaque. Plaque irritates the gums, so brushing it away prevents gum disease.

A lot of brands have **Sodium lauryl sulfate** , which can cause canker sores for some.

I went through a phase of getting a ton of canker sores, and once I switched to non-SLS toothpaste, they were much more infrequent.

Stannous fluoride is slightly better than sodium fluoride. [[Source](https://now.tufts.edu/articles/other-fluoride)] Brushing with any fluoride toothpaste is better than nothing. In the U.S., stannous fluoride can be found in only some toothpaste sub-brands like Crest Pro-Health and Colgate Total SF.

I try to tell this to anyone who will listen. Any fluoride is good. Don’t rinse after brushing.Whitening is fine but can worsen tooth sensitivity, great.

But my thing is, novamin. Patent owned by gsk and for some ridiculous reason sold as rx only mi paste for a a hundred dollars or something idiotic in the US. Novamin has been shown to improve the efficacy of fluoride and also recalcify early caries (calcium donator or some shit),added benefit of teeth whitening. You can buy sensodyne with novomin in almost every other country otc for the price of normal toothpaste. can be purchased on amazon. Usually ships from Canada, uk or Portugal. Do it
