Does my phone connect with the GPS satellites or through another system? How does GPS handle so many pings?

GPS is normally a one way system.
It works like radio in that you phone or sat-nav device only acts as a receiver.
All the satellites do is broadcast where and when they are and your device just does the math based on that to figure out where it is by comparing different signals.
The satellite does not know if any received the messages it is broadcasting.
