Drowning insects?

What happens to insects – especially flies etc when it really heavily rains?
How do they not get hit mid flight and drown in rain drops?

Smaller ones get pushed aside by the air moving out of the way as the raindrop falls. Bigger ones can get hit by a drop and be just fine because their cuticle is waterproof. Usually though, insects just tend not to fly with rain.
