Eli5: After losing sleep, why are people more sleepy the day after, rather than the day they lost the sleep?

For example, you only get 4 hours of sleep
Suday night. You are tired on Monday, but it’s not too bad. Monday night, you get your normal 8 hours. But on Tuesday you feel exhausted. Why does that happen?

Is that a thing?

If i miss sleep one night and catch up the day after I’m fine

If i miss sleep multiple days in a row i start to feel exhausted

Everyone is different though and sleep varies massively from person to person

I don’t think this is the norm tbh id absolutely be tired on the day after no sleep, and feel refreshed the next day after sleeping.

From what I have experienced, it is related to sleep debt.

It means that if you had 5 hours of sleep but you expected to get 8, you are in debt of 3 or so hours. Those hours need to be caught up in your sleep the next day.

Another thing could be if you consume caffeine or a lot of sugar to keep your self awake. The crash that comes with it could cause you to be tired the following day.
