eli5: Allergies. Why did we as a species develop allergic reactions to certain foods, chemicals ext.?

I just don’t get why our bodies would reject nourishment or have a bad “reaction” to something as simple as grass.

It’s not intentional. Allergies are our bodies misidentifying harmless things (like pollen) as harmful and incorrectly firing up our immune systems to attack them as if they were dangerous. Allergies are a bug, not a feature.

There are many competing hypotheses as to why allergies exist. Some are genetic – just mistakes in our base code – and others are thought to be caused by immune systems not having enough actual diseases to fight off, so they don’t learn the difference between “good” and “bad”.

Im no expert, but I liken allergies to phobias, mundane things that make you scared AF, the immune system sometimes overreacts to certain things in much the same way. I don’t think it was developed on purpose. (again I’m not an expert just leaving my 2 cents)

Ya, why am I allergic to pollen? It’s so bad I feel like nature is trying to burn my eyes out for 2-3 months of the year.
