eli5-Are our Genes getting worse?

Im sure There was a time in history when there was just half a milion humans on the planet. These people made kids and the population increased. They are our ancestors and we are healthy. So why is it a problem with Iceland who has half a million population, they have to watch out bc they might be realated and they may produce bad offspring. Before iceland was even discovered the populatio must have been even smaller and the people were okay? Please explain it to me, I must be stupid.

Modern people in Iceland just don’t like to take chances when it comes to their children’s health. While ancient humans didn’t have a choice and just ended up with “bad offspring” occasionally. It doesn’t matter for the population overall if some number of families get unlucky, it only matters to those families.

Just a note about Iceland – most of the people in Iceland live in or near Reykjavik. Outside of Reykjavik, Akureyri in the north is a decent sized town. The largest town in the east part of the country is about 2,000 people.

So when you hear about people in Iceland caring about their genealogy, it is probably more of a thing for locals who may live in a very sparse area. If your family has lived for generations in a village of 100 people, odds are pretty high that someone is related to you!

Catholiic church banned marrying cousins so you had to go outside of your clan to find a partner. If they would not did that we would have cast system like in India in every european country
