ELi5: Before sheep shearing by humans was common, did all sheep just grow large, unmanageable coats that caused them to overheat or attracts pests and just eventually die?
Sheep were selectively bred to make more wool and require shearing. In nature sheep had less wool and it would come off by brushing against things such as trees or rocks. Think of all the different breeds of dogs. Same Idea but with sheep.
