Kant believed that there are certain moral rules that everyone should follow, regardless of their personal preferences or circumstances.
The Categorical Imperative has three different formulations:
1. Act only according to that maxim by which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.
This means that before you do something, you should ask yourself whether it would be okay for everyone to do the same thing. If the answer is no, then you shouldn’t do it either.
2. Act so that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as an end and never merely as a means to an end.
This means that you should always respect people as individuals and never use them just to get something for yourself. You should always treat people with dignity and never exploit them.
3. Act as if the maxim of your action were to become through your will a universal law of nature.
This means that you should act as if your actions are setting an example for everyone else in the world. If everyone followed your example, would the world be a better or worse place?
