Sometimes I watch shows related to prison life as well as listening to stories of ex-cons, and one thing that struck me as odd was the protocol of bending and coughing in front of an officer to see of your hiding anything illegal. How does that work? How do the officers know for sure that there actually isn’t anything in there after one cough? If there is stuff in there, how can it come out just by coughing?

Fact, there is not a nationwide standard on strip-search procedure. Merely that, it should be conducted in a non-conspicuous area (within the building) in consideration to the subjects privacy, that is be conducted with as much dignity as possible under supervision of 2 individuals on the same sex (unless exigent circumstances exist).
The whole “bend and squat” has historically been a productive way to find contraband (mainly drugs). Not much gets passed x-ray, which is also commonly used in facilities.

You’re not just bending over, you’re also pulling your butt cheeks apart, which helps to loosen the muscles holding your anus shut. Is the object you stuck up there going to come rocketing out? Not unless its absolutely gigantic. But the person watching shouldn’t see any meaningful motion in your anus when you do that.
If someone has something in their rectum, having them bend over, spread their cheeks, and cough will cause their anus to press out a little bit. At that point a more thorough examination of their rectum can be performed.

They made us squat down and cough. It loosens the muscles and whatever’s in there is generally going to fall out.

My understanding is that, if it’s a sharp object, squat and cough will make it stab you internally.
I might be totally wrong but I always assumed it was kind of like when your dog is barking really loud and their butt does that weird winking thing. I figured the corrections officers are taking a peek in there as your balloon knot winks as you cough
