need some help in math 🙂

calculating and talking about these topics general

fouriertransformation, harmonic analysis, modulation set

the only thing i know is, there is a connection between these topics

A fourier transform takes any function or set of data usually a y(t) type thing (but it could really be anything, and could be multi dimensional… but let’s not get into that) and turns it into a A(f), where A is amplitude and f is frequency. Essentially it takes the function, turns it into a bunch of sinusoids (of different amplitudes and frequencies) that have could have been summed together to get the y(t) and outputs it as A(f) so that you can graph it as amplitude vs frequency to see what frequencies are most common in your data. I’m a little rusty on the other terms.

Imagine you are sitting on a dock and watching waves come in. These waves can be easily described as something with a wavelength and an amplitude. One wave every 5 seconds for example, with a height of one meter. That frequency and amplitude are a Fourier coefficient. Now image a small boat goes past and creates another, higher frequency and lower amplitude wave “ on top of” the original wave. Now you can see two different waves on top of each other. Then you have two Fourier coefficients that you can add together. So F=A(f1) + B(f2)… and so on, with as many coefficients as you like.

This is very useful if you want to take a complicated wave pattern and remove some of it. For example if you are looking at something electronic and part of your signal is background noise (50 Hz) then when you reconstruct the waveform you can just remove the noise part of the Fourier series.

Harmonics are an easy concept that is difficult to explain without pen and paper. Look it up on the Khan academy website, they usually have good stuff.

Is anyone out there who can help with modulation set (german. Modulationssatz)?
