Did the first astronauts understand what it felt like to walk on the moon prior to departing? And if so how was it calculated and recreated?

From the books I’ve read, they had a pretty accurate understanding that the moon’s gravity is 1/6th that of earths. That’s why some have hypothesized that Alan Shepard’s one armed golf shot (the second one. He muffed the first one) may be the longest golf shot in history.
