Eli5: How are small amounts of water able to spread over large surfaces?

I used my electric floor steamer and put in maybe a quart of water but i was able to clean about 500 square feet of floor before it ran out and wet the whole floor. How does that small an amount of water spread over that much surface?

Really close together water molecules become really spread apart water molecules when the steamer heats them up
