eli5: How can a TV have an infinite contrast ratio? My brain seems to think that there must be an actual cap to this.

Contrast ratio is the ratio between the light given off by the brightest pixel and the darkest pixel. If you have a TV like an OLED TV, you can turn individual pixels off, so they are giving off no light at all. This is a classic divide by zero situation. If any of the pixels give off any light at all when one gives off no light, the contrast ratio is infinite.
