Eli5 – how can water be made of hydrogen and oxygen?

Liquid water – made from two types of gas. Makes no sense to me, whatsoever. Water seems to be one of the strangest substances and we completely take it for granted that, apparently, it’s made of gas!

It’s not made of gas, it’s made of two atoms of hydrogen and one of oxygen (both of which ARE gases under standard conditions) but that’s irrelevant really.

A substance’s state of matter depends on how molecules interact with one another and water molecules REALLY like hanging out together (this is ELI5 so I’ll just say that for further reading look up Electronegativity, dipoles and Hydrogen bonding) so they are attracted to one another enough to make the bulk liquid under standard conditions.
