Eli5 How did neurologists come up with 25 as the exact age for prefrontal cortex to be fully developed?

Every person grows differently physically and mentally no? How do they measure it? I’m asking bc I want to know if it’s possible for someone young like a 18 year old to be smart and level headed. Is it impossible? Is it solely based on human biology? How does it work?

It’s average. People die at different ages and they are able to study the brains of dead people who donate their body to science.

And some people are somber and self-controlled from a very early age. Life experience often forces people to adapt.

It is definitely based on average. When I first had to study this statistic in class, the average age was 23. The more data we get, the more of the big picture we can see (which causes a shift in the average simply because there are more data points to average out). It’s like “one size fits most” – it fits a lot, but you’ll still have a considerable amount of people on either side of the average, who are older or younger than 25.

They’re average numbers based on numerous studies. Those studies have shown that the average age for a brain to fully develop is 25( or other). There are outliers but that’s what it is on average. Also, maturity doesn’t necessarily equal brain growth, it does but not to that extent.
