eli5 How do animals like cows digest food with multiple stomachs

Each stomach has a different “job” and the enzymes etc break down different plant material. So as the food moves to each stomach parts of the plant/grass that the prior stomach may not be good at digesting, the new compartment or the one after will likely have the “tools” for the job. One of the stomachs job is to catch things like rocks that can’t be digested for example.
