Eli5: How do cable length testers work?

Namely about ethernet, you plug in the cable and it tells you the length, nothing on the other end or anything else, and i have no idea how to google for that as every time i do i just get a “take the device and plug the cable in” kinda result. If nothing else tell me what to google.

It is called a TDR. Time domain reflectometer. A “signal” energy source is sent down the cable when it encounters a short, termination, or a open ,not terminated, it send back a inverted signal to the machine. Using signal propagation it measure the distance.

It emits a pulse into the cable, some of the energy of which is reflected back to it. It then measures the time difference in send and receive, and divides by the known speed of travel for such pulses (and by 2 for the round trip).
