Contacts act as a barrier to keep your cornea, the front clear surface of your eye, from being exposed to air and drying out.

Contacts actually cause the opposite problem: preventing your cornea from getting oxygen. Your cornea is alive but since there are no blood vessels, it “breathes” through air contacting through your tears. Contacts have to be made of special materials to allow air to go through to prevent your cornea from being damaged due to lack of oxygen.

They don’t, they become dry and itchy very quickly.

Even the thinnest, most moisture permeable lenses can be worn for a few hours before they become uncomfortable.
