Eli5 How do garbage collecting companies know if you put the wrong thing in the bin?

For example if you have a recycling bin and they refuse to collect it because something inside was not recyclable? It’s a common enough issue where I live but I was always wondering if there’s something more then just the bin man lifting the lid.
