Eli5 How do we know about other planets surface, temperature and atmospheres?

I recently saw a post somewhere that supposedly it rains diamonds on Neptune and Sulphuric Acid on Venus etc.
How do we know that? Is it just a guess or do we have scientific evidence for it?

They use spectrometers to analyse the light being reflected of those planets or objects to determine temperature and find out the makeup of the atmosphere.

Can’t remember how it works from science class back in the day, but different elements make a different pattern in the rainbow when you something something through a prism, maybe magic involved?
