eli5: How does a camera save what it captures?

Depends on the technology in the camera.

If its a film camera, the light is focused on a strip of chemicals which are effectively ‘burnt’ by it and so capture the image.

A digital camera focuses that light onto a grid of photosensitive sensors, much like our eyes, and it records the data it gets from them.
