Eli5 How does an optometrist knows what prescription they have to give for a baby?

I was watching videos of babies seeing their mom for the first time and while it’s adorable, it left me quitte puzzled.

Every time I go to the eye doctor, she asks me a bunch of questions and makes me look at all sorts of lines and lights to make sure my prescription is as accurate as possible. I started wearing glasses around 9yo so I already could read and express myself. How do they know what the baby needs?

It is possible to scan the eye by machine. You basically shine light into the eyes, look at the back of the eye and adjust the lenses until you can see that part clearly. If you can’t see clearly out your eye, you can’t see clearly into that person’s eye either.

It’s not quite as good as having the patient provide direct feedback, but it’s WAY better than nothing.
