Each muscle fiber has a set amount of strength it can pull. Exercising often tells the body that you need more muscle fibers, so the body produces more. The fibers don’t get stronger, you just have more fibers that can pull.

Each time you work out the muscle, some of the fibers break. When this happens, your body doesn’t just replace those broken ones but actually builds a little more than you had before. Do that enough and the muscle will noticeably grow in size and strength.
