And the facial ID still works. How does it still know it’s me?

So the face id doesn’t actually compare pictures of your face to verify your identity, instead when it is set up, it is using a depth sensor to basically Create a 3D model of your face. This is not a completely detailed model however as that would be impractical for letting you in, so instead it just maps important features: placement and size of eyes, size and shape of nose, placement of mouth and ears, etc. Getting a haircut wouldn’t affect these features, and the software is also designed to work with glasses, jewelry, and the like. If you were to get cosmetic surgery or be disfigured from some sort of injury however, your face might be altered enough to not be within the acceptable parameters to match the model.

Many recognition systems use reference points on your face and measure the distance between them. Tip of your nose, corners of your eyes, tops of your ears etc. If the structural dimensions of your face match up, you’re in! Glasses and hair don’t have an effect, cosmetic surgery or a deformative injury may.
