eli5: How does getting hit in the jaw result in a knockout?

987 viewsBiologyOther

I like to watch videos of people fighting from time to time and kept seeing videos of people getting put to sleep via jaw shot. How does this work? How does the brain immediately go unconscious like that? What causes the brain to shut off so quickly?

I seem to remember that unconsciousness was in most cases caused by the shearing force between the neurons that make up your brain. You are basically giving someone brain damage.

(That being said, my training was is medical trauma rather than sports medicine, so boxing may be different to car crashes)

Which is why I’m of the mind that bare knuckle boxing is safer than regular boxing as the forces on the brain are reduced as you can’t punch as hard.
