Eli5: How does heat affect the body?

We sleep with blankets on, and have heated homes. However there is a fine line between a relaxing amount of heat and too much heat. Why is it that basking in the sun is enjoyable, but a cold winter day is not?

Your body has a process called homeostasis. Every single part of your body works to keep itself at a constant level. The temperature of the human body is ~37 degrees celsius. When we go above that (get too hot) we become uncomfortable because our brain is trying to tell us to cool down. The opposite is true when it is too cold, as our body tries to warm up. That’s why people get red faces on cold days, as the body sends more blood to the surface in an attempt to warm us up
