Eli5: How does male catheterization work?

Hello everyone,

When inserting a catheter for males how does one deal with the Y split inside the urethra where one side goes into the bladder and the other towards seminal vesicles. Can a urine catheter actually go the wrong way?

The size of the catheter tip – even the smallest size – is still far large than the very small opening to the seminal vesicles. I’m not aware of any situations where that has occurred in my practical experiences, nor is it highlighted in training simply because it just doesn’t happen, and I have not come across any case studies that have explored this happening in normal anatomy/practice.

Your greatest risk with male catheterisation is prostate damage.
