eli5 how does muscle memory work?

It’s not so much muscle memory as “used a whole bunch, so let’s store this first in the index of all the stuff we know how to do” in the brain. Repetition leads to stronger pathways and “faster” recall of those skills (vs the image of your favorite rock from when you were 3yo)

A non-physical analogy for this is how store workers know what aisle everything is on, because they get asked a hundred times a day, and have to keep recalling this info, so it’s quick.
