One of the ways this can help is by noise reduction. Instead of simply taking one picture which will have a certain amount of graininess due to random noise, you can take a series of pictures over a short space of time. You can then average between them (using software to make sure the images are lined up), and that can help reduce the noise in the image.
Because the noise is random, it’ll be different from image to image. By contrast, the actual stuff in the image will be in the same spot.
This is essentially what Google’s astrophotography mode does, but here it takes a decent camera and makes it look epic!
